Diaries of a Labor and Delivery Nurse: Choose to Evolve

As a nurse, it’s easy to feel neglected, unappreciated, and borderline abused. I once heard of a physician that compared nurses to rape victims. I didn’t know exactly what they meant by that, but I knew it wasn’t good and I never looked at that physician in the eyes ever again. When I mentioned it to my coworkers, we uneasily laughed at how weird and crazy some people were. We went about our day, chucking their words with the slew of other bizarre things that had ever been said to us. But still now, months and months and months later, their words sting, each letter like a little dagger. And for a moment, even if just for a split second, I hesitate before speaking, fearful that their perception will be—-well, I don’t know what. But I hesitate.

Nursing has come a long way since my mother became a nurse 40+ years ago, but we still have a long way to go. We have to remember that each new day, even each new shift, has the possibility for change. Don’t get stuck where you are at at this moment. Don’t undervalue, underestimate, or dismiss the small changes that we’re each able to make on a daily basis, within ourselves or within our facility. Even the smallest of change has the opportunity to snowball, has the ability to help evolve ourselves and our nursing profession. We can’t control the actions of anyone around us, but we can change the way we react, how we handle different situations, how we grow, how we would choose to lead. And make no mistake, if you are a nurse, you.are.a.leader. Change may not be easy or instant and the fight is never-ending. We don’t always do the right thing. We frequently question our decisions, our voice, our worth. But every day is a new day and with every breath we take we can choose to CHANGE. To lead. To not let fear soften our voices, no matter how deep we think those daggers will go. I may do a lot of things that could have been done differently, but the one thing I refuse to do is to be a victim. I refuse to let anyone drag me down, to kill any spirit I have left inside of me. If I have the option to evolve or repeat, don’t blink 😉 And I hope you choose to do the same ♥

Until my next delivery ❤

I want to hear what you have to say!
