To Every Nurse That Hates Nursing

I recently read a headline written by a nurse who declared to hate nursing. At first, I felt so deeply disheartened. They were not the first person I have heard recently proclaim their hate for the nursing profession. But this article, out there and so blatantly in-my-face, stirred up so many emotions inside of me. Here’s what I want to say to anyone out there that genuinely hates being a nurse…

Get out.
Leave.
Do something else.

Shame on you for continuing to take care of people in varying levels of vulnerability and shame on US for allowing you to do so. There are a million and one things to dislike about our working conditions. There are a million and one things that are wrong in healthcare. There are a million and one things that need to be changed. Hate the hours. Hate being short-staffed. Hate the constant scrutiny. But then get over it and do something about it. Do you know what a person is who complains about everything, but does nothing to change anything? A whiner. That’s like my 3 year old.

I understand your frustrations. Countless times I have wondered if I can continue to be a nurse. I’m tired too, my feet also hurt, and I hate that we have additional tasks thrown at us every single shift. But hate nursing? I refuse to allow your negativity to influence my love for our profession and I hope and pray it doesn’t influence anyone else’s. More than anything, I want you to know that negativity is contagious. It spreads so rapidly, suffocating everyone around you, sucking the life and energy out of everything. Don’t let that be the kind of nurse you are. Don’t be that person. If you can’t look around and find the beauty in the work we do, and you’re unwilling to do something about it, then it’s time to go. And it really is that simple.

For anyone else out there that is exhausted, for anyone else that can no longer find the meaning of the work we do, believe that you have the ability to change everything. No one said nursing would be easy. No one ever said it wouldn’t involve hard work. But you must believe that anything is possible, that you have the power to do whatever you wish, and you have to keep your focus on our patients before the weight of nursing drags you down. Let the good work we do propel you forward. Let that guide you to think bigger and be bigger. And if you don’t think that’s possible, then get out.

Until my next delivery ❤

Beautiful! Amen sista! I am an OB/GYN who reads your blog religiously. So much applies to doctors as well as nurses.
