I was pretty hesitant to come here, because you don’t have a server, you order your food at a counter and get buzzed from a buzzer when it’s ready.  I can’t lie—I like having a server. I met some girlfriends here after work, so I would have loved to have ran in and just sat down and just enjoyed the food (and service!). lol  That being said, the restaurant was super cute.  I chose the restaurant because they were open at 4 (we were going to meet at Shade, but they weren’t open until 5, and the same for the Glass Wall) and they were listed in a number of ‘Top Houston Restaurant’ searches online.

I started with a half order of the Caesar salad. It was massive. That’s one thing to note, the portions, even the half portions, were soooo big.  My Caesar salad would have been PERFECT, except it wasn’t cold-cold. I like my salad to be crispy cold.  It was more luke-warm. But it had a delicious taste, and it’s the best salad I’ve had in a really long time. They are known for their homemade pasta, so I also got the Canestri alla Funghi with crimini & shiitake mushrooms, garlic, sage, and marsala cream sauce. It was really good. The pasta was perfect, and everyone loved my food better than theirs…but I left the restaurant and for days I thought “I don’t think I like sage.”  lol  So that is my only warning, if you order this dish, make sure you’re a fan of sage. I knew I wasn’t, but I love mushrooms so much that I thought I would give it a go.

paulies2My girlfriend got the gorgonzola salad and ate every bit of it. She also got the spaghetti and meatballs, and she said it was delicious. My other girlfriend got a Panini and she ate most of it (it was large!).  But like I said, they liked my pasta the best!

Paulie’s is known for their cookies. I had a black walnut chocolate chip cookie and I thought it was fantastic! They had decorated shortbread cookies, and I didn’t care for those at all. I think the shortbread was too thin and the icing wasn’t sweet enough. I only took a couple of bites and then threw it away. It just didn’t taste good, and I’m a cookie girl.   My friend had a raspberry cookie and she said it was just okay.

The restaurant is located right across from a school, and it was cute to see all the kids run over after school. They have a great wine bar, but it wasn’t open at 4pm, so we didn’t get a chance to try it out.  Next time!

I would come here again. I would get something different, but I would have the Caesar salad again. They had a lemon butter pasta that sounded good and a chicken parmesan that also sounded yummy.  I gave this restaurant 3 stars because I wasn’t blown away, but I would come back here again if I were in the neighborhood. And there has to be something said for restaurants that make their own pasta…

    Mediterranean mussels sautéed in olive oil, dry white wine, onion, garlic. Tossed in fettucini pasta.  Dinner salad & garlic bread.
