#nurseswomenbabies would love your support on upcoming LEG regarding Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

The House and Senate are currently working together to introduce bipartisan legislation regarding Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS).

Legislation is expected to support assessment of existing research, studies on prevention and treatment for NAS, analysis of current available treatment options for moms and babies, and assistance with collecting data on neonatal abstinence.

Please share this post via twitter or Facebook and tag your Senate Representatives.  I’m currently working on a list of House Reps 😃

Can you please explain exactly what LEG regarding NAS it is? (I might have missed it if you already explained it…please kindly point me in the right direction.)

When a newborn has been exposed to drugs before birth, they suffer withdrawal after birth.

“NAS is seen most often following exposure to opioids, but it can also be induced by exposure to antidepressants, central nervous system stimulants, and hallucinogens. The pattern of neonatal behaviors seen in infants exposed to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, for example, is clinically similar to that following opioids and other drugs but may be caused by exposure to, rather than withdrawal from, the antidepressant agents. Polydrug use can make the prediction of neonatal effects difficult. NAS is typically manifested by neurologic, gastrointestinal, and autonomic dysfunction, and the affected newborn exhibits a state of hyperirritability that is exacerbated by environmental stimuli.”
