5 Superstitions that Labor & Delivery Nurses Don’t Believe

Not everything your mom/grandmother/neighbor says is true…

  1. Drinking castor oil will help you go into labor.

So drinking any kind of oil will do one thing: give you diarrhea. Even though your grandmother may swear by it, if your body is not ready to go into labor, very few things will actually get you there. Save yourself a lot of hassle (and a lot of trips to the bathroom) and skip an all-oil breakfast or you may just spend the rest of your afternoon on the toilet and NOT in a labor room.
  2. Walking will help start labor.

You’ve been walking the entire time you’ve been pregnant! No one knows what triggers your body to go into labor. It’s a magical mystery! And although it is good to be activeduring your pregnancy and labor, there is no evidence to say it will actually initiatelabor.
  3. The Chinese calendar can predict the sex of your baby.

There’s a 50/50 chance that the calendar will guess correctly. Flip a coin!
  4. Bad acid reflux means your baby will have a lot of hair.

Although some people will swear by this, it’s actually your elevated pregnant uterus that causes you to have acid reflux. I had horrible acid reflux with both pregnancies, and one baby came out with a head full of hair and the other one came out bald. You just never know!
  5. Getting an epidural will give you back problems.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter if this is a superstition or not. Most people who will want an epidural will BEG for one when the time finally comes to get one. They will say to hell with back problems! Epidurals are more likely to give you hypotension than any kind of back issue.

Until my next delivery ❤

Hey Shelly, I remembered this study and looked for it. This was from the New York Times. And I know for a fact that eating a big plate of spaghetti will induce labor. I know this because I have had to clean the remains off the floor and in the trash cans of the triage room more times than I can count! LOL! Sharan Health | Really?
